ESD Protective measures Whereever people move or material is moved, electrostatic charge is generated. Electronic modules with increasingly smaller structures may be damaged or destroyed by electrostatic discharge. As it is not possible to feel electrostatic charge or to measure it with a multimeter, it is not easy to recognize the risks for components and modules. Example for the effects of electrostatic discharge: • 3000 Volt Persons can feel discharge (e.g. on door handles) • 100 Volt may be sufficent to delete information on a magnetic data medium • 50 Volt Sparks may ingnite explosive gases • 30 Volt may damage or destroy electronic components • 20 Volt may damage LEDs and lead to their failure after some time. • 5 Volt are sufficient to damage reader heads of hard disks during fabrication The components damaged by electrostatic discharge may lead to a failure or a shorter service life of the concerned modules. In order to prevent electrostatic discharge of persons and material, ESD protective measures are required. The target is to avoid discharge and to discharge slowly charged material by means of grounding. Areas which serve to allow the safe handling of electronic modules are called ESD protection zones or EPA (Electrostatic Protected Area). These areas are especially marked. Independently of the equipment of the ESD protection zone, additional measures have to be observed: • ESDS may only be processed in electrostatic discharge protected areas (EPA) • Ensure a personnel grounding with wrist straps and footwear grounding • Wear dissipative clothes covering other garments • Avoid electrostatically chargeable materials like conventional PE, PVC, polystyrene, etc. • Avoid electrostatic fields > 5000 V/m • Only use marked ESD packaging and transport containers • Deploy only ESD trained personal in EPA protection zones Example of an ESD protection zone EPA (Electrostatic protected area) 19.
